The most important thing you can graduate with is not a piece of paper or a GPA. Those things will almost be irrelevant within a year of graduation. In addition you should focus on developing your personal, intellectual, social, and financial capital.

1. Personal capital is how well you know yourself. Do you know your strengths and weaknesses? Do you know your passions and interests? Do you know your purpose and what makes you unique? In college you will study a lot of things, but the most important thing to know in life is yourself. So if school doesn’t create time for you to be introspective, you have to carve out that time for yourself.

2. Intellectual capital is what you know. Unfortunately, just because you graduate from college doesn’t mean you know that much. Most college graduates would be afraid to lecture for 30 minutes on whatever it is that they supposedly majored upon graduation. Intellectual capital includes your domain expertise in a subject or at a skill. You can develop this even if it isn’t your major.

3. Social capital is who you know and who knows you. Most college students graduate without ever meeting an alumni. Alumni are your most valuable resource when it comes to career change. On top of that, the 25 friends you have now will likely dwindle down to 5 after graduation when everyone moves away. You can build your social capital by joining national organizations, a fraternity or sorority, or a professional organization. But keep in mind that leadership is more important and valuable than membership, so seek to be a leader in any organization you are involved with.

4. Financial capital is who knows that you know what you know. Read that again. And again. The way to make more money after (or during) college is to make sure that the right people know you. It’s a mixture of intellectual and social capital. If you want to be a consultant but you don’t know anyone who works for a consulting firm, your chances are slim. By letting people know who you are, where you are, and where you’re trying to go, they can help you reach your desired career, company, or job.

Focus on that four-point-zero, but also focus on these four points. They both will serve you well going forward. It’s not your fault, but it is your future.
